🚗 Germany · Indian Driving Licence Conversion

Convert your Indian driving licence in Germany

You have 6 months to drive in Germany on your Indian licence after registering. After that, you need a German one — here's the complete process.

⚠️ Important: Indian licence NOT automatically convertible

Unlike EU licences, Indian driving licences cannot be directly converted to a German one. You must pass specific tests. However, you get significant exemptions — typically only needing the theory test + a shorter practical test rather than a full course.

📋 Step-by-step process

1
Get International Driving Permit before you leave India

Apply at an RTO in India. Valid for 1 year. Not mandatory but makes the first 6 months easier in Germany.

2
Get your Indian licence officially translated

You need a certified German translation. ADAC offers this service, or use a sworn translator (vereidigter Übersetzer). Cost: €30–80.

3
Enrol at a German driving school (Fahrschule)

Most Indian licence holders must take at least 2–4 mandatory driving lessons covering specific German-only topics (motorway, night driving etc.) before the practical test.

4
Book and pass the theory test (Theorieprüfung)

Available in English! Book via TÜV or DEKRA. 30 questions, need 30/30 minus max 10 penalty points. Study using the official app.

5
Book and pass the practical test (Fahrprüfung)

Taken in your driving school car with the school instructor present. Usually 45 minutes. Must demonstrate all required manoeuvres.

6
Submit to Fahrerlaubnisbehörde

Take your test certificates, Indian licence, translation, Anmeldung, passport photos and application form to your local driving licence office.

📱 Theory test in English

The German theory test is available in English (and 20+ other languages). Download the Driving Licence Germany app or use fahren-lernen.de to practise all 1,000 official questions. Most Indians pass within 2–3 weeks of focused study.

Tip: Book theory test first at TÜV/DEKRA — waiting times can be 3–6 weeks. Start your Fahrschule in parallel so practical is booked right after.
ℹ️ Rules vary by state. Some German states have additional requirements. Always confirm the current process with your local Fahrerlaubnisbehörde before enrolling at a driving school.
