Who can claim?

Any parent living and working in Germany — regardless of nationality. You need a valid residence permit and must have lived in Germany before the birth.

How much?

65–67% of your average net income in the 12 months before birth. Minimum €300/month even if you had no income. Maximum €1,800/month.

When to apply?

Apply at your local Elterngeldstelle (part of the Jugendamt) within 3 months of birth — it's backdated. You can apply online via ELSTER in most states.

Taxable?

Elterngeld itself is tax-free but increases your tax rate through the Progressionsvorbehalt — your other income (if any) is taxed at a higher rate. Declare in Anlage Kind.

ℹ️ Estimate only. Actual Elterngeld depends on your exact income over the 12 months before birth, special payments (bonuses may be excluded), and the month of birth. Always confirm with your local Elterngeldstelle.
