Navigating the Rundfunkbeitrag (German Broadcasting Fee)

€18.36/month per household — how to register, split with WG flatmates and handle the reminder letters.

What Is It?

Mandatory broadcasting fee funding Germany's public broadcasters. Every household pays €18.36/month — applies to everyone registered in Germany including international students and expats.

Who Pays?

One payment per household. In a WG: only one person registers and pays — others are covered. The registered person can request contributions from flatmates (typically €4–9/month each).

How to Register

Go to rundfunkbeitrag.de, register using your Anmeldebescheinigung. Set up a direct debit (SEPA Lastschrift) — much easier than quarterly manual payment.

Exemptions

BAföG, Wohngeld, Bürgergeld recipients: exempt — apply at rundfunkbeitrag.de. Students on low income may qualify.

Reminder Letters

If you don't register, enforcement letters follow. The system traces registered addresses. Register as soon as you complete Anmeldung.
