The Anmeldung (address registration) is the single most important bureaucratic step in Germany. Without it, you cannot get a tax ID, open most bank accounts, sign a mobile contract, or receive your residence permit. You must register within 14 days of moving into your accommodation.
Bring these to your Bürgeramt appointment: your passport, the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (a form your landlord signs confirming you live there), the completed Anmeldeformular (registration form, downloadable from your city's website), and — if you have family — their passports and your marriage/birth certificates.
Bürgeramt appointments are notoriously hard to get in big cities. Book online through your city's portal the moment you have an address. Slots often open early morning — refresh the booking page at 7–8 AM for cancellations. In Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt, appointments can be booked out for weeks, so plan ahead.
This landlord confirmation is legally required. Your landlord must provide it — if they refuse or delay, remind them it's their legal obligation under the Bundesmeldegesetz. In a shared flat (WG), the main tenant or landlord signs it. Never attempt Anmeldung without this document; you will be turned away.
The appointment itself takes 10–15 minutes. The official checks your documents, enters your details, and gives you the Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) on the spot. Keep this safe — you'll need copies for the bank, employer and Ausländerbehörde.
Your tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer) arrives by post automatically 2–3 weeks later. Give it to your employer immediately or you'll be taxed at the highest rate. You can now open a bank account, get a proper mobile contract, and book your residence permit appointment. Everything unlocks from this one certificate.
Don't register at an address where you don't actually live — this is fraud and carries fines up to €1,000. Don't miss the 14-day window; while enforcement varies, late registration can complicate your visa. Don't lose the Meldebescheinigung — replacing it means another appointment.
