Mastering Budget Grocery Shopping in Germany: The Desi Guide

Aldi vs Lidl vs Rewe vs Kaufland, loyalty apps, Pfand returns and a full desi weekly shop under €60.

The Supermarket Hierarchy

Discounters: Aldi, Lidl (cheapest, excellent quality). Mid-range: Rewe, Edeka (better selection, loyalty apps). Good for Indian items: Kaufland. Asian supermarkets: dal, atta, spices, fresh curry leaves.

Aldi vs Lidl

Lidl: basmati rice and frozen vegetables more reliable. Aldi: better prices on oil, pasta, dairy. Both carry coconut milk. Neither carries fresh curry leaves.

The Pfand System

Returnable bottles carry €0.08–0.25 deposit. Return to any supermarket's Pfandautomat machine — even a different chain. A family of 4 can recoup €15–20/month.

Loyalty Apps

Rewe and Edeka apps have weekly digital coupons (€5–10/week value if planned around). PAYBACK card works across Rewe, DM, Aral.

Weekly Indian Shop Under €60

Basmati 5kg €5. Red lentils 2kg €3. Chana dal €1.50. Mustard oil €3. Spices €8. Onions 2kg €2. Vegetables €10. Paneer 400g €7. Yoghurt 1kg €2. Total ≈ €42.
